Last month, Swiss international food and drink company, Nestlé, acquired a majority stake in the high-end Californian specialty coffee roaster and retailer, Blue Bottle Coffee.

Blue Bottle Coffee has created a solid standing reputation for themselves over the past 15 years. Starting out originally as a small company, they have grown to create a small network of cafes, an espresso cart, the occasional pop-up, and a small fleet of commercial coffee roasters in Northern California known as Loring.

Known for their premium cold brew, Blue Bottle Coffee also offers a line of ready-to-drink, roast and ground products which are sold online and in the retail market. The company has uncompromising attention to taste, freshness and sustainability and with its unique minimalist style, it has helped cement a trusting relationship with its customers.

The company operates coffee shops in major US cities and in Japan. With 29 coffee shops in total, that were listed at the end of 2016, this number is expected to grow to 55 by the end of 2017.

Blue Bottle Coffee CEO Bryan Meehan has stated, “my goal as CEO has been to secure a sustainable future for Blue Bottle Coffee that would enable it to flourish for many years to come. I’m excited to work with Nestlé to take a long-term approach to becoming a global leader in specialty coffee. We felt a real kinship with the team and knew it was the right move for us.”

The 68% stake in Blue Bottle Coffee will mean Nestlé will certainly strengthen its position in the US coffee market, the largest in the world, and will even add to its success internationally. Already, Nestlé is the world’s largest coffee producer, with brands including Nescafé and Nespresso. Nescafé, alone, is available in over 180 countries and Nespresso has more than 600 boutiques worldwide.

Blue Bottle Coffee will aim to continue engaging their loyal customers the same way they always have, operating and functioning as a stand-alone company. However, they will gain full access to Nestlé’s capabilities within the coffee industry as well as its worldwide consumer reach.
